I read Heartless back in March when I first received the ARC from Indigo Teen. And let me just say I almost died then and there because I had one of my most anticipated reads of 2016 IN MY HANDS. And I was practically still a new blogger so I was absolutely ecstatic to be able to read and review an ARC of a New York Times Bestseller and the author of The Lunar Chronicles which I absolutely adored. So, I dove right into the novel and absolutely devoured it. I rate Heartless with a solid 4 stars for its great characters and plot.
Let’s just start off by saying I absolutely love Marissa Meyer’s writing. Since reading Cinder, I can tell her writing has improved with every novel she writes. Heartless has definitely been some of her most solid writing so far. It has so many beautiful lines in it. Here are some of my favourite quotes from Heartless:
“Sometimes your heart is the only thing worth listening to.”
“But hoping,” he said, “is how the impossible can be possible after all.”
“The easiest way to steal something, is for it to be given willingly.”
Marissa’s world-building is, yet again, spot on. We all know the magical and whimsical Wonderland, but do we really know it? Marissa brings her own twist to the world and it was absolutely amazing! She brought back all of our familiar characters and added unique qualities to each of them to make the story she wanted to tell.
Also, I really loved the characters in Heartless! While Cath was slightly boring in my opinion, she was a great protagonist. It was quite obvious as to what she would do as we all know how the story goes, but the way Marissa wrote it made me really connect with Cath and I could feel the reason why she decided everything she did. My favourite character in this book definitely had to be Jest. He was hilarious, charming, and witty, and definitely the most enjoyable character in the book. He broke my heart.
The only thing that bothered me with this book was that we all know how the Queen of Hearts ends up being this mean lady. Marissa built everything upon that so I didn’t find the plot very interesting in the sense that there were no obvious plot twists for me personally. I kinda predicted most of what was going to happen. That isn’t to say that I didn’t enjoy the events within the book. I just wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking for something completely new in terms of plot twists.
Heartless was one wild emotional ride and if you love amazing characters and anything in the world of Alice of Wonderland, this book is definitely for you! It’ll definitely rip out your heart lol.
Will you be reading Heartless? Or have you already? How did you like it?
